‘R.I.P. Garden of Eden’ star Keshia Knightley dies at age 57

Keshiya Knightley, the first-ever black actress to play a role in a movie and the first black lead on a major TV series, has died at the age of 57, according to her representatives.

Knightley was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer on April 1 and was admitted to a New York hospital on April 4, where she remained in intensive care for about a week, according the Hollywood Reporter.

She died Monday.

“Keshia was surrounded by her family, friends and loved ones who were deeply saddened by her death,” her reps said in a statement.

“She was a true gentleman who loved and respected her friends and family and is deeply missed by all of them.”

A film about her life was released last year.
